The first lighthouse in Workum was built in 1643. This simple tower consisted of a slab resting on four oak posts on which a fire basket was placed.
In 1712 the first permanent structure was built, but an open fire was retained. It wasn't until 1880 that an oil lamp was installed. With the construction of the Afsluitdijk and the associated closure of the Zuider Zee from the open sea, the lighthouse became superfluous and was officially deleted in 1932 and replaced by a smaller guide light line.
