About the history

In June 1256, Bishop Otto II of Münster undertook a - certainly arduous - journey to the remote Brünen-Beylar, where the bishop ceremoniously consecrated the new Augustinian Hermitage monastery on June 7th. So that he would not be forgotten as the secular founder of the monastery, Sueder IV of Ringenberg wrote a deed of donation in 1258. The content of the deed also explains the name of the district, as the monastery was dedicated to Mary, the mother of Christ. Over the years, the name Marienthal completely replaced the old field name Beylar. From 1256 to 1806, the monastery was inhabited and managed by Augustinian Hermits.

To the present

Today, the single-nave hall church in late Gothic architectural style is a center of contemporary sacred art. This is thanks to the pastor Augustinus Winkelmann, who lived and worked here from 1924 until his death in 1954. Cubist, constructive and abstract art movements, manifestations of the new Rhenish expressionism, set the tone here. The church already had precious windows by Dieckmann and Wendling in 1929.

Sights

A special gem for connoisseurs is the bronze portal by Prof. Edwin Scharff, which depicts the "Credo". It is considered to be on a par with the works of Mataré in Cologne and Salzburg and Manzu in Rome. The small adjacent cemetery is also worth seeing, where almost all the gravestones are works of art. Dates of birth and death are deliberately omitted in order to remind people of the insignificantly short span of earthly life in view of eternal life.
