Ritterstein 252 ring wall - mountain fortress - Hallstatt period - Middle Ages - 400 Schr

The Ritterstein refers to an extensive area in which, as the name suggests, there is a ring wall / mountain fortress and a burial ground from the Hallstatt period. However, former living caves in the sandstone can still be found here. A ring wall is a ring wall made of stones, rubble and wood. The Ritterstein stands on the Königsberg near Neustadt.

One of the Palatinate Forest Association's more than 300 knight's stones is located here.

He points out historical traces up here on the Königsberg:

There are several “burial mound fields made of sandstone blocks” from the Hallstatt period (1000 - 650 BC) “over a length of approx. 350 m on the back of the western summit” [near the Ritterstein].

Even on the east summit, which is a little further away (towards Speyerbach), there are remains of a ring wall from the time of the Celts, who built a hill fortification here. This mountain fortress was reactivated in the Middle Ages ("50 m long forewall with gate system in the saddle between the east and west peaks").

The knight stone cultivated by the Palatine Forest Association was erected on the crest of the Königsberg, as here was an extensive burial ground and a ring wall. This comes from the Hallstatt period, which dates back to about 800 BC. Begins and is called pre-Roman Iron Age.
