"When the Schwafheimer Meer, one of the typical Lower Rhine channel waters, dried up in the early 1970s due to mining and water management influences, what was left of the waters, which were once important for fauna and flora, was only a not very attractive hollow. Instead of aquatic and marsh plants, only blackberries soon grew and nettles.
After the NABU district group Wesel was founded in 1977, the new association wanted the Schwafheimer Meer to be restored to its original state. Since the owner had a lot of understanding for nature, he made the 10,000 m² area available for further development free of charge.
After some water management measures - in particular the use of swamp water - the now filled to the brim hollow of the Schwafheimer Meer again developed into an ecologically promising biotope. In 1992 it was declared a nature reserve with a large area (approx. 28 ha).

Unfortunately, the viewing platform is no longer accessible. But the small detour at the beginning or end of the sea is definitely worth it. At the other end is a beautiful footbridge and you can also hike along the Aubruchsgraben.
