The Great Pond was the castle pond of the former House of Brünninghausen. It is fed by several natural springs from the Schondelle and Wiesenbach, and also by warm pit water from former mining shafts, which may keep the pond ice-free for a little longer in winter. Water birds, fish and turtles can be observed from the asphalt paths with benches and viewing platforms and a popular bridge. The old beech trees and other trees on the lake shore are particularly colorful in autumn.

The springs flow to the Schondelle, which flows through the Rombergpark from south to north. Already with the arrival of the park, a part of the water of the Schondelle is conducted parallel via a separate run, the Wiesenbach, and feeds the castle pond of the former Brünninghausen house in the northern part of the park. North of the castle pond, the Pferdebach flows from the east into the Schondelle. The Schlossteich (Big Pond) has an island and bar-like viewing platforms with benches in the water. Here you can see waterfowl, big fish and even turtles.
