Location and history: The Balkeshau forest area lies north of the Neckar between the communities of Altbach and Plochingen. It is bounded in the east and north by the L 1150 road.
The Balkeshau forest area is located in the Schurwaldrand-Altbach-Plochingen-Reichenbach landscape protection area and consists of areas particularly suitable for landscape-related recreation.
As in the Birkengehrn forest area, the forest is a mixed forest, but where the deciduous trees dominate.
A settlement in the forest area Braunhalde has already been in very early times due to various finds.
As early as 1814, there were considerable plantings in the Balkeshau forest area on a large scale and with great success on an area of 150 acres of more than a million alder trees and some birch trees. The plants were all 3-4 years old and some of them were planted in such groups so that there was still lush grass growth.
The Katzenlohbach flows through the Balkeshau forest area. This rises in the north and flows into the Neckar at the end.
At the Upper Balkeshauweg you will also find a Celtic barrow and a MTB trail, the grass snake trail, which is also maintained by an MTB club.
