Tervuren Park has nine ponds, constructed in different periods. The first series of ponds is fed by the Voer, the river that gives Tervuren its name.

The Kasteelvijver (near the center of Tervuren) has been known since the 12th century, during the construction of the ducal castle. In 1765, the Kasteelvijver was connected to the Gordaalvijver – see komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/1776479 – by a canal, which allowed Charles of Lorraine to reach his Manufactory (now defunct) from the castle by gondola.

The Vossemvijver was constructed from 1885 onwards, based on plans by the German landscape architect Edouard Keilig, who also designed the surrounding landscape park, which forms a successful transition to the southern canal ponds. The Kleine (Small) and Grote (Great) Vaartvijver (Great Vaart Pond) were originally not straight and were probably straightened in the mid-18th century.

The Sint-Gertrudisvijver (Saint Gertrude's Pond) originated in the Middle Ages. Today, there are two large and one small ponds. They are located in the narrower strip separated from the more well-known ponds by the forest and southeast of the Vossemvijver (Vossem Pond), which, of course, is located in the sub-municipality of Vossem.

The park is managed by the Flemish Government's Nature & Forest Department and the Belgian Buildings Agency (Regie der Gebouwen) and seamlessly connects with the Sonian Forest.
