        The storm surge in the Baltic Sea in November 1872 is considered to be the most devastating flood in history, statistically it is considered a millennium event. The cause was storms days before the great flood, which pushed large amounts of water towards Finland and the Baltic States. At the same time, North Sea water flowed through the Kattegat for days. Then the wind turned, followed by a two-day hurricane that drove the water masses back to the southwest. An outflow of the water in the direction of the North Sea was impeded by the strong north-easterly wind. The dammed water masses led to unimaginable flooding on the coasts of the southern Baltic Sea.
