This place of worship, the "Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore" in Bergamo, is dedicated to the Blessed Mother of God Santa Maria. The addition "Annunziata" of the patronage refers to the feast of the Annunciation to Mary (feast day is March 25th, exactly 9 months before Christmas), when the angel of the Lord brought her the message that she had the Son of God - Jesus Christ - should give birth.
According to the account in the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke, this happened in Nazareth (Israel). There is a large church on the spot where this happened - according to around two thousand years of tradition - which can therefore be considered the 'original patron church' for the title of the cathedral of Bergamo.
