"Basalt has always been used by people as a building block for walls, fortresses and road construction. When the first railway lines ran through the Westerwald in the middle of the 19th century, industrial basalt mining began in this region. In 1883, the Moritz brothers began mining basalt at Roßbacher Häubchen Hatzenport on the Moselle. In the beginning, the quarrying was done with the simplest of means. The basalt columns were loosened with crowbars. On the quarry floor, they were sorted by hand according to the possible uses. Unshaped stones that could not be used directly were crushed by the stone crushers into gravel and paving stones. The loading took place first by horse-drawn cart and then on trucks. A so-called braking track ensured safe transport to Roßbach/Wied.

When Basalt AG in Roßbach received a major order from Holland, other quarry workers also had to be transferred to the hut. The major order related to the “draining of the Zuidersee”, for which the so-called “Afsluitdijk” was built. In 1941/42 the basalt mining at Roßbacher Häubchen was ended."
