This gas power plant was built in the 1990s in connection with the replacement of the former August-Thyssen coking plant with the new building at the Schwelgern harbor 500 m further north. It is also called "Obelix" because of the design of the natural draft cooling tower. As part of the combined gas economy, unneeded amounts of gas are converted into electricity from the (weaker) blast furnace top gas and the (higher yield) coke oven gas and process steam is generated here.
