    The Orvieto Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture in central Italy and is considered the "most beautiful cathedral in Italy".         The patronage of "Santa Maria Assunta" (in German: Assumption of Mary) of the Cathedral of Orvieto refers to one of the many memorial days or feast days in honor of the Mother of God Mary.           The Cathedral of Orvieto (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta) is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture in central Italy.
          Due to the location of the city of Orvieto, the most important building, the Roman Catholic Cathedral with the patronal feast of the Assumption, can be seen from afar. The cathedral is one of the great number of important buildings planned at the end of the 13th century. It was probably begun in 1288 under Arnolfo di Cambio (1240-1302), who was to build the cathedral and the Palazzo Vecchio of Florence some years later. 1308, the shell was finished without roof and facade. It was completed after drawings by Lorenzo Maitani in the 14th century. In 1889, the cathedral was also awarded the title of a minor basilica.

            What I remember even after decades are the incredibly complex ornaments and figurative representations on the facade. Only when you stand close in front of it do you see how deep the facade is designed - something that is a little lost from the distance. So get close and discover the details! Towards evening the sun is reflected in the gilding - fantastic.
