The Orvieto Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture in central Italy and is considered the "most beautiful cathedral in Italy". The Roman Catholic cathedral bears the patronal feast of the Assumption and can be seen from afar. In 1889, the cathedral was also awarded the title of a minor basilica. The construction began in the 13th century and lasted many centuries with the contribution of the most important Italian artists.

The patronage of "Santa Maria Assunta" (in German: Assumption of Mary) of the Cathedral of Orvieto refers to one of the many memorial days or feast days in honor of the Mother of God Mary.
