Singapore's national symbol - the Merlion - with the head of a lion and the body of a fish.

The body symbolizes Singapore's humble beginnings as a fishing village, then called Temasek, meaning "sea town" in Old Javanese.

The head stands for Singapore's original name Singapura, which is Malay and means "Lion City".

When looking closely the fountain is visible during the whole walk around the Marina. Despite of being Singapores national symbol it almost vanishes against the skyscrapers behind it.
