The Antonius Chapel in Erkertshofen was built in 1712. For decades it was the destination of pilgrims who went to them individually or in groups. In response to popular requests from the faithful, in 1876 the annual sacrament procession and the St. Antonius patronage celebration were approved by the then Eichstätter Bishop Franz Leopold Freiherr von Leonrod. Since the Antonius Chapel was threatened with decay after 200 years and also no longer met the spatial requirements, it was decided on October 5, 1913 to rebuild the small church. Construction of the chapel began on April 27, 1914 and was completed on June 10, 1914.

After a serious fire in 2014, in which the entire interior of the chapel was almost completely destroyed, the chapel was again extensively renovated and the interior was reconstructed true to the original.

For the Antonifest, which is always held on the Sunday following June 13th, the forest chapel is visited annually by hundreds of believers from the parish of Erkertshofen, the surrounding parishes and far beyond.
