Place Bellecour is the largest square in Lyon and the fifth largest square in France, as well as the largest pedestrian square in Europe.
In its center is an equestrian statue of Louis XIV, as well as two pavilions, the tourist office and a small park with an original play area for children.

The monumental Place Bellecour was a swampy area in the Middle Ages that was used as a dumping ground, until the Archbishop of Lyon bought it and turned it into a walled garden. City residents called it "Bella Curtis", which means beautiful garden. Over time, the name was changed to Bellecour. It is currently the largest square in the city: 310 by 200 meters (with red gravel).
