Hardly any monument has grown so dear to the hearts of the people of Cologne as the equestrian monument in honor of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. on the Heumarkt, popularly known as "et Pääd". However, it was a long way before the horse and rider could proudly sit enthroned on the impressive base in their current form.
