Hardly anyone suspects that the area around the city of Goslar in the Harz was already populated in the Stone Age. In addition to typical living caves and ancient steps, you will also find a rock that has been worked out as a shell stone. In short - everything indicates use since the Stone Age.

A Christian chapel was established in one of the residential caves in the Middle Ages.

Northeast of the old town of Goslar is located on the edge of the wooded Petersberg a striking and legendary listed rock formation with a long and colorful past. This structure called Klusfelsen becomes visible to the interested visitor only from close proximity. Not least for this reason, this ancient place of worship is probably also a tourist destination that has so far been spared by the great influxes of tourists.

The approximately 20 meters high and 50 meters long rock ridge lies on a geological fault zone. The rock consists of sandstone, which formed from deposits of a shallow sea about 110 million years ago. These sediments in present-day Harz foothills were erected almost vertically at the end of the Cretaceous by raising the resin plaice, similar to what happened at the Teufelsmauer between Blankenburg and Ballenstedt.
