Gotha was the cradle of modern insurance.
The Insurance Museum reminds of this with historical documents, photos and fire insurance signs. Most of all will
Ernst Wilhelm Arnoldi (1778–1841), born on May 21, 1778 in Gotha, honored. He is considered the "father of the German insurance industry". The Gotha merchant's son professionalized the insurance industry in the 19th century, making statistics, mathematics and medical examinations the standard for life insurance. In addition, Arnoldi introduced that the insured participate in the profits themselves (“mutual insurance association”).
The magnificent building at Bahnhofstrasse 3a was once the seat of the Gotha life insurance bank.

The Museum of the German Insurance Industry was opened in September 1998 and existed until 2006. The basis was a collection of insurance history from Gothaer Insurance, rich in materials and tradition. By the beginning of 2009, most of the holdings were relocated to the Gothaer Insurance Headquarters in Cologne.
The exhibition is housed in the historic meeting rooms of the life insurance company and in the foyer of today's Thuringian Finance Court and Social Court in Gotha. The museum can be visited every Monday (except on public holidays) as well as during city tours or by arrangement with the Gotha Tourist Information office outside of the opening times.

The building was built in 1893/1894 in the Bahnhofstrasse in the historicism style according to plans by the architect and building officer Bruno Eelbo, who is now based in Leipzig but has been active in Gotha for many years. It reflects the style elements of the Renaissance and Romantic periods.
The overall architectural appearance of the building appears monumental, it corresponded to the desire to represent the bourgeoisie of the time. The solid architecture in historical style embodied stability and security, which was in the interests of Gothaer Lebensversicherungsbank.
The three-part relief, which is attached to the striking staircase as a special eye-catcher, was created by the Leipzig sculptor Adolf Lehnert.

The former Gothaer Lebensversicherungsbank building is now home to the Ernst Wilhelm Arnoldi German Insurance Museum, the Thuringian Finance Court and the Gotha Social Court.
Gotha is considered a cradle of the German insurance industry. The merchant's son Ernst Wilhelm Arnoldi founded the first mutual fire insurance bank here in 1820 and the first life insurance bank on German soil in 1827. The offices of his companies were initially located in the guild hall on the lower main market until they later received their own representative buildings on Bahnhofstrasse.
The headquarters of the Gothaer Life Insurance Bank was completed in 1894, an eclectic building based on plans by Bruno Eelbo. After 1945, the building became the headquarters of the GDR's state insurance company. After reunification, the insurance group "Gothaer Versicherung", which was based on Arnoldi's company, bought it back and subjected it to extensive renovation. It now houses the Thuringian Finance Court and the Gotha Social Court, but also the Ernst Wilhelm Arnoldi German Insurance Museum.

In the insurance company's historic boardrooms, visitors can learn everything about the origins of modern German insurance, but also about the achievements of Arnoldi, who decisively professionalized life insurance with statistics, mathematics and medical examinations. The “Stages of Life” relief created by Adolf Lehnert in 1904 in the spacious staircase impresses visitors, as does the “SERENADE” concert series, which is held here in the museum foyer.
