The Castillo de San Martín, in the council of Soto del Barco, is located on the right bank of the river Nalón, on a pronounced bend from which the channel opens towards the estuary of San Esteban de Pravia. Its location, on a promontory barely 40 m high, provides it with an excellent visual domain over the mouth of the most important river artery in the region and justifies its long history as a fortification.
The current castle was built by Alfonso III on the remains of a previous settlement, in order to protect the coast and the estuary from Norman incursions.

On a hill, not far from the mouth of the river, sits this little fort. Here you can find drinking water and as you walk along the wall to the water you will find a small jetty where you can cool off your feet.
