Despite its centuries-old, often turbulent history, Westervoort has always remained Dutch territory. In the eighteenth century it was even located directly on the Dutch eastern border. And it was precisely from that east that the danger came. Although the Nederrijn and IJssel formed a natural barrier, the IJsselmond had silted up to such an extent that there was no longer any protection.

The water in the Lower Rhine has always been higher than in the IJssel and after much consultation it was decided in 1741 to build an inlet (lock) at the Gelders Oort near Westervoort. This inlet made it possible to flood the hinterland in the event of imminent danger. Even all the way to Doesburg. Naturally, this important lock had to be protected and Fort Geldersoord was constructed for this purpose.
