The Duke was highly educated and always fond of books. During his reign he brought his entire library with him to Wolfenbüttel.
After the well-read Duke passed away in 1666, the “Bibliotheca Augusta” already contained 35,000 volumes.

Where the main staircase of the former Bibliotheca Augusta (Herzog August Bibliothek) stands at the entrance portal today, an arm of the Oker ran along it for centuries.

In 1884 the S-shaped Oker arm was diverted and the river bed was filled.

The current library building was built in the Neo Renaissance style as early as 1881-1886.

From 1779 to 1781, the Lessinghaus in front of it was the residence of the court librarian Gotthold Ephraim, who wrote the famous drama >> Nathan the Wise << here after the death of his wife.

For centuries, an Okerarm, flowing through the dam fortress, ran along the main staircase of the Bibliotheca Augusta; In 1884 it was derived to the north and filled.
From 1881 to 1886, the current library building was built in neo-renaissance style. Its important predecessor, the baroque library rotunda built by Hermann Korb between 1706 and 1710, had to be demolished in 1887 due to dilapidation. This half-timbered building had at that time influenced the construction of the so-called Radcliff Camera (the Baroque Observatory) in Oxford, the Weimar Court Library and probably also the Vienna Court Library.
The today's Lessinghaus was from 1779 to 1781 the residence of the court librarian Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, who wrote here after the death of his wife his famous drama »Nathan the Wise«.
