The installation of the town's water supply system in Schwalenberg is considered an outstanding achievement in the history of technology in the Middle Ages. Its origins are attributed to Cistercian monks. The open moat supplies the town with vital water over a distance of 2.2 km - a major challenge for the time, as the difference in height from the Magdalenenquelle to the edge of town is only 10 meters. From there, the water "falls" another 10 meters until it flows into the "Volkwin fountain" on the market square in the old town, supplying the town with the water it needs for people and animals.

The fountain was created by the Lippe artist Friederich Eicke in memory of the founder of Schwalenberg.

The Volkwin fountain is located on the market square in Schwalenberg and is fed by the town water from the Magdalenen spring. On the fountain is written: "This water was dug by two men and was freed from their chains in ancient times. The men are dead, the water never dies, and still springs merrily from the mountain today as it did in ancient times."
