The awe-inspiring Hongu-Taisha Shrine is the innermost sanctuary of the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage. Here, the special Kumano Shinto faith merges with Japanese Buddhism to form a unique entity. As soon as you enter the place, you will be able to feel its spirituality. The venerable complex was built here in 1889, after the buildings at the original location on the river were damaged too much by a flood.

The shrine is breathtaking. Especially if you have previously done the hike on the Kumano Kodō, you will be rewarded again with the shrine. However, on weekends in high season the shrine can be very crowded - depending on the time.
