Historical indication:
During the Second World War, Carons Hofke was occupied by a division of Italians in the German army. They turned the lanes into horse stables, farriers, stores for food, ammunition, etc...
The officers stayed in the "Villa van Caron".

Notches from that period are still clearly visible in several trees, although they have grown together after more than 75 years. Were these applied out of boredom or out of homesickness?

Merksplas was liberated on September 30, 1944 by the First Polish Armored Division. Caron's farms on Hofeinde were set on fire. Thus, the German occupier was driven out by the Polish liberators. There was also hand-to-hand fighting in the "Villa van Caron". it is said that 'the blood floated down the stairs...'.
