Forchheim's stately fortifications were built in the mid-16th century based on the Italian model and withstood the Thirty Years' War. The wall was completed in the 18th century with the construction of bastions in the French style.

This partially preserved section is the two oldest, the so-called "old Italian" bastions, with which the medieval city wall was strengthened beginning in 1553 after the 2nd Margrave War and the temporary capture and plundering of the city by Albrecht Alkibiades.
They were presented to the integrated into the medieval city wall Stadtburg ("Imperial Palace") and mark the beginning of the expansion of the city to a later Baroque fortress.
Bonmot on the edge:
The Forchheim retaliated and completely reduced the neighboring margrave city of Baiersdorf and its castle "Scharfes Eck" to rubble and ashes. The works were at least partially built with stones of their walls; the surviving Baiersdorfer had to do Frondienste to do so.
