The heavy iron door behind this grille was the entrance to a secret NATO headquarters, the Joint Operations Center, from 1954 to 1992. It was a communications center where coordination took place for the Allied land and air forces from Northwestern Europe to the Iron Curtain. Information about troop movements on both sides of the Iron Curtain was collected and processed here.

How long does a typical visit to the Former NATO Headquarters Cannerberg historical site take?

A visit to the Former NATO Headquarters Cannerberg is exclusively via guided tour. These tours typically last around 1.5 to 2 hours, allowing ample time to explore the extensive underground corridors and learn about its history. Factor in additional time for arrival, check-in, and any exploration of the immediate surroundings before or after your tour.

Is the Former NATO Headquarters Cannerberg suitable for families with children?

The site offers a fascinating and educational experience for those interested in history. However, given the nature of a guided historical tour in an underground complex, it might be more engaging for older children and teenagers who can appreciate the historical context and duration of the tour. Younger children might find the length or historical details less captivating. There are no specific 'family-friendly activities' within the bunker itself, but the surrounding natural area offers opportunities for walks.

Is the Former NATO Headquarters Cannerberg wheelchair accessible?

Due to its location within a former marl quarry and its design as a Cold War bunker, the Former NATO Headquarters Cannerberg is generally not wheelchair accessible. The complex features 8 kilometers of corridors, and while the interior maintains a constant temperature, the terrain and structure may present challenges for mobility. It's best to contact the tour operator directly for specific accessibility inquiries.

What should I wear when visiting the Former NATO Headquarters Cannerberg?

The underground complex maintains a constant temperature of approximately 18°C (64°F) year-round, regardless of external weather. Therefore, a light jacket or sweater is advisable even in summer.
