Herthaburg was a Slavic refuge castle on the Jasmund peninsula. In it, people defended themselves in the event of attacks. Surrounded by the chalk coast, the castle was difficult to conquer. According to legend, the goddess Hertha lives in the mystical lake right next to the castle.
Today Lake Hertha is a refuge for many rare animal and plant species. Its isolated location protects it from disease and disasters. The almost circular lake is far away from other lakes and rivers. It gets its water from rain and is 11 meters deep in some places.
