Only about 36 kilometers east of Delphi lies the monastery of Hosios Loukas hidden in the middle of the hills. Although the complex has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1990, it is a less touristic destination than some other places in Greece.
Saint Luke was charismatic, miraculous and had prophetic abilities. He had even predicted the reconquest of the island of Crete from the Byzantines (the island was under Arab rule), accomplished by Nikephoros Fokas in 961.
The monastery of Hosios Lukas, also known as the monastery of Osios Loukas or the monastery of Luke, is one of the three most important Byzantine monasteries in Greece, along with Daphni and Nea Moni.
