Bäjterek (Kaz. Бәйтерек, literally poplar) - monument and lookout tower in Nur-Sultan, the capital of Kazakhstan. The construction was completed in 2002. It symbolizes the new status of the city of Nur-Sultan as the capital of Kazakhstan, becoming its symbol and tourist attraction popular among foreign tourists, as well as native Kazakhs.
The appearance of the monument is to be the embodiment of the Kazakh folk tale about "the mythical tree of life and the magic bird of happiness". According to the story, the bird, named Samruk, put its egg in the gap between the two branches of the poplar tree, which is the tree of life supporting the sky, thus the sun was formed. The more than 105-meter-high structure of the building consists of a narrow cylindrical shaft widening upwards ("tree"), and a golden sphere with a diameter of 22 meters, reflecting the "egg", containing an observation deck [1] and an art gallery. The author of the design of the erected building is the English architect Norman Foster.
The Bayterek Tower is located on the back of every Kazakh currency tenge banknote, introduced in the new series of banknotes in 2006 and in the new coat of arms of Astana, introduced in 2008.
