In 1891 a marriage was made under the oak tree. The lovers had previously hidden letters in a knothole in the oak. In the years that followed, more and more couples used this knothole. Today the groom's oak even has its own postal address.

The imposing oak is said to be more than 500 years old

The Dodauer forester's daughter (Mrs. Ohrt) and the son of a Leipzig chocolate manufacturer (Mr. Schütte-Felsche) loved each other, but their parents didn't want them to get together. So they wrote each other letters, which they deposited in a knothole in the old oak tree. However, the parents could be persuaded and the two married in 1891, of course under the oak tree.

In the years that followed, more and more lovers used the knothole to write letters, until 1927 a ladder had to be set up and the post office began to deliver letters here.

Since then, anyone who writes a personal ad or whatever to “Bräutigamseiche, Dodauer Forst, 23701 Eutin” has his letter deposited in the knothole by the post office. And anyone who wants and is interested can come and take letters (and of course answer them).

And there is also a legend about the planting. More on this below
