Small lock

The first lock was built in 1898. The lock chamber is 65.93 m long, 8.60 m wide and designed as an economy lock with four economy basins. It is no longer in operation and has been recognized as a monument since 2002.

Big lock

Another lock chamber was put into operation as early as 1914. It is 162.03 m long and 9.93 m wide and, with these dimensions, is at most suitable for European ships.

New lock

At the beginning of 2016, the Ahauser branch of Johann Bunte Bauunternehmung received the first order to build a new lock chamber. With a usable length of 135 m and a width of 12.5 m, it will allow the passage of large motor barges. The new lock will be built between the two old chambers, so that the Great Lock can be operated safely even during the construction work. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new building took place on August 23, 2016. After its completion (probably in 2019), the old buildings will be converted and partially demolished.
