The Byodoin Temple is an impressive example of the Buddhist architecture of the pure land (Jodo). Byodoin was originally built in 998 as a rural retreat for the powerful politician Fujiwara no Michinaga, not as a temple.
Michinagas son turned "Byodoin" into a temple and built the most spectacular attraction, the Phoenix Hall. The hall is also pictured on the back of the Japanese Ten Yen coin.
