The houses on the market square and the old town hall in its current form were built after the great town fire of 1790. This broke out on May 13, Ascension Day, in a house near the Kreuztor in the upper part of the town and destroyed 166 houses, 17 barns, the town church, the diaconate, the school, the town hall, the brewery and the Fronfeste. The oldest town documents were also destroyed because they were in a copper box that melted in the intense heat.
