In 1642 Franciscans from Rheine founded a monastery in Vechta. The church was completed in 1731. In 1812, the monastery was dissolved by decree of Napoleon and rebuilt into a penitentiary. In 1885, the interior of the church was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style. The state-owned Protestant church is used among other things as an asylum church of the prison Vechta. There are also concerts and exhibitions in the church.

In 1642, the Franciscans from Rheine founded a monastery in Vechta. The monastery initially had only a small chapel. 1727 was the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of a new monastery church, which was completed in 1731.
In 1812, the monastery was dissolved and vacated by Napoleon's decree. In the following years, the monastery was rebuilt as a detention center. The 1816 planned demolition of the monastery church could be prevented by the resistance of Catholics and Protestants; it was converted to a simultaneous church between 1816 and 1818. From 1885, the interior and the windows were redesigned in neo-Gothic style
1955 to 1957 was a renovation of the building. In 1957 the west window was redesigned, in 1958 a new organ was erected on the gallery and the church was equipped with electric heating. 1960, the baroque high altar from Amelungsborn (district Holzminden) was placed in the monastery church, nine years later, a pulpit from the 1630th The state-owned church is now used among other things as an asylum church of the prison Vechta. On April 25, 1642, the Franciscans of the Saxon Franciscan Province (Saxonia) were given a house with a garden in Vechta to establish a monastery; permission for this had already been granted by the Bishop of Osnabrück, Franz Wilhelm von Wartenberg, on April 29, 1640. In the course of 1642, six Franciscans moved from Rheine to Vechta.[1]
