Hermann Schülke was born on March 26, 1873 in the rural community of Kähme/ Birnbaum [...] district. After working for the city of Essen and the public limited company Rheinische-Westfälische Industrie in Essen, among others, he was called to Duisburg and in the following years made a name for himself with the construction of a waterworks (the first part of which was the water tower on the Kaiserberg), the emergence various school buildings, the expansion of the Kaiserberg, then still called Duissenberg, into a place for excursions and recreation, and the erection of the war memorial on the beech tree and the Mercator memorial on the Burgplatz.
