Where the Burgwerben Castle is today, there used to be a Saxon castle called Wirbinaburg. The lands and castle belonged to Duke Magnus of the House of Billung (1045-1106) and later to his daughter, Eilika. You don't need to know Duchess Eilika, but you could know her son Albrecht I of Brandenburg, also known as Albrecht the Bear. Albrecht the Bear is considered the founder of the Mark Brandenburg, because he conquered the Slavic tribe of Heveller and Christianized the area. The Berlin bear and the bear in the coat of arms of Saxony-Anhalt can be traced back to Albert the bear.

In the late 9th century a castle by the name of Uuirbinaburg is mentioned. At that time there were at least three places and two castles near Weissenfels that bore the name of Uuirbina. It was only later that qualifiers were added to these places in order to be able to distinguish them better. This resulted in the place names Markwerben, Tagewerben, Reichardtswerben and the place with the probably more important castle, Burgwerben.
