Already mentioned in the 11th century, the castle was the seat of the Seigneurs of Freinet, who was a feudal lord of the Counts of Provence. In the Middle Ages and early modern times, the castle was lent to various noble families, who changed and expanded it. Defeated in the Huguenot wars, she was in 17./18. Century transformed into a castle-like complex. After being confiscated during the French Revolution and then used as a quarry, the castle gradually fell into ruin. Today, their remains are secured and are open to visitors free of charge throughout the year.

The ruin towers over Grimaut and offers great views. It is advisable to first walk to the castle and then to walk the town in serpentines
