The original Notre-Dame-de-la-Sarte chapel was destroyed in the 16th century during the Wars of Religion.
The church was built between 1624 and 1628 in brick and limestone on a medium-sized base and consists of a single nave ending in a three-sided choir.
The original choir was doubled in 1931-1932 by a choir for the Dominicans. The current decoration was renewed at the end of the nineteenth century in the neo-Gothic style, but the building has retained much of its original furnishings.

The Legend of Notre-Dame de la Sarte:
Legend has it that the wooden Black Madonna was brought to the then chapel by a crusader, although art historians date the Madonna to the late 15th century.
The original Notre-Dame-de-la-Sarte chapel was destroyed in the 16th century during the Wars of Religion. In the summer of 1621, a local woman named Anne Hardy passed by the destroyed chapel on her way home from collecting firewood. Looking at the statue, she decided to give it a better home (or did she want to burn it?!). She hid the Black Madonna under her firewood and wanted to carry it away, but to her surprise, she couldn't lift the bundle at all, even when she asked two passersby to help her. The three realized that the Madonna refused to leave her sanctuary, so they returned her to her niche. To this end, the miraculous statue was lifted with ease. News of this supernatural event immediately attracted crowds of pilgrims. Three affidavits were obtained from witnesses. Soon the chapel was rebuilt and Heaven granted more miracles. The church could not accommodate the crowds of pilgrims and so a larger church was built from 1624 to 1628.
In 1656, when a drought threatened the land with famine, the local government and clergy organized the usual public supplications to the Virgin, only this time they added a procession. The Black Madonna was solemnly brought down from her mountain to the city. No sooner had she returned to her sanctuary than the rain, so desperately needed, began to fall in abundance. Since then, the ritual has been repeated every seven years. It begins with a special devotion on the night before August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven, followed by the procession the next day.
On June 26, 1896, the Black Madonna was canonically crowned.
