The striking Zakken carriers house from 1725 served as a guild house for the Zakken carriers guild Sint Anthonis. The bag carriers have been allowed to unload goods since 1465, supplied by the many grain and malt ships. The guild and the Zakken carriers house therefore formed an important link in the Schiedam economy. In the roof of the turret hangs a clock that warned the bag carriers when goods were to be loaded or unloaded on a ship. There is a waiting room in the building for the bag carriers who lived in the neighborhood and would not hear the bell. The work was "smashed" for the distribution of work: the men dropped dice through a funnel, and whoever rolled the highest eyes got the available work. Despite increasing industrialization and mechanization in the nineteenth century, the bag carriers remained indispensable for transport. The Schiedamse Zakken carriers guild is the only guild that still exists in Europe.
