The legend of the Maiden's Well tells the following story:

In ancient times, the town of Blankenrode stood on the heights of the Egge Mountains. Over the vast, dark forests, one could look far into the countryside. Mighty walls and a mighty castle were meant to protect the people. But time and again, the territorial rulers waged wars across their borders.

Once again – in the dead of night – robber barons attacked the mountain town. Fierce fighting ensued. The attackers stormed the walls and entered the town. Murder and arson reigned in the streets and alleys. Old men, women, and children were murdered, and people ran for their lives.

Cruel soldiers also pursued a young girl, the mayor's daughter. In her greatest distress, the girl jumped into the town's deep well and drowned. As dawn broke, the castle and town were desolate and empty.

A forest grew over the ruins. But the fountain, there in the middle of the forest, is still called the "Maiden Fountain" today. The trees are reflected in its clear waters...
