We started early and had the gorge almost to ourselves. An absolute highlight, and not just for children - high rocks, water and plants create a unique backdrop.

      Always beautiful.

At its narrowest point, the Drachenschlucht is only 68 cm wide. So nothing for larger dragons. Anyone who knows one is welcome to try it.

But for baby dragons a real experience and a little adventure.

The Drachenschlucht is a gorge near Eisenach in the Thuringian Forest in the nature reserve "Forests with Gorges between Wartburg and Hohe Sonne".

The gorge is located in the south of Eisenach, between the southern outskirts (Hotel Sophienaue) and the forest town of Hohe Sonne am Rennsteig. There is the Annatal, the southern end of the Mariental. The Drachenschlucht, together with the neighboring Landgrafenschlucht and the Ludwigsklamm rising from the Johannistal, are popular hiking destinations, especially in the summer months. The southern access is at the Hohe Sonne, the northern access is at the driveway to the Waldhaus Sängerwiese. The entire route of the B 19 from Eisenach in the direction of Gumpelstadt and Meiningen runs parallel to the gorge. There are parking spaces for hikers at both main entrances. For safety reasons, additional paths have been created to enable the gorge to be left quickly in the event of a storm or an accident.

The Drachenschlucht was opened as a hiking trail in 1832. Their reorganization and amendment was carried out by the Weimar forest management and forest management system.

Absolute recommendation! In combination with the Landgrafenschlucht it is also easy to run with children. Sturdy and waterproof footwear is recommended, as parts of the trail are flooded after heavy rainfall. A fascinating and varied landscape!

When the weather is nice, it can get pretty crowded.

Here the hiking trail meanders through the narrow rock faces. A beautiful, small gorge, which is however more frequented.

Drachenschlucht - Narrow gorge with many plants, rivers and streams as well as a popular hiking trail with boardwalks.

In order not to have too many people around, it is better to do the hike here during the week and especially not during the holidays. In autumn you also have great lighting moods and leaf colors. From Hohe Sonne, in connection with the Landgrafenschlucht (which is quieter), a great round.
Good footwear is required, as the wooden bridges can be slippery.

In 1832, the Drachenschlucht was opened up as a hiking trail. In spring and winter, it is advisable to wear sturdy shoes as it can be very wet.

I had been looking forward to it for a long time - and it was really worth it. But best during the week, unfortunately you can go in both directions ... and that is a bit annoying, because in some places it is really narrow. And all the Instagrammers really clog the way ...

We were only able to walk the first (lower) part of the Drachenschlucht, as the second part was still closed after the consequences of heavy rain and storms and the clean-up work will probably take longer. Luckily we were already there in the morning, so that we were almost alone in the gorge.

The nature reserve at the Wartburg, which is characterized by valleys and gorges, is particularly attractive. The rock found here from the "Rotliegend" arose about 270 million years ago through the removal of weathering material
from the southeast Ruhlaer saddle of the Variscan Mountains in the
Eisenach Mulde. This created sediments from the boulders and
Gravel alternating with clayey layers of varying thickness. Due to the pressure when the sediments were superimposed, conglomerates formed from coarse materials, the so-called Wartburg conglomerate. As a long-distance effect of the rise of the Alps around 70 million years ago, the
Thuringian Forest uplifted. As a result, the Wartburg conglomerate, previously covered by younger strata, and the clay-bearing areas came to light again. Due to weathering and the erosive effects of the water
the predominantly clay strata between the hard conglomerate
rinsed out. This is how the gorges, valleys and grottos were created
can often be found within the nature reserve. The name Rotliegend for this rock is derived, among other things, from the
red coloring caused by the iron mineral hematite.

The Drachenschlucht in the Anna Valley is unique in Thuringia, with its gorge, some of which is just 70 cm wide.
The nature reserve is traversed by several spring streams and has a widely ramified network of running water.(...from the information board)
