    The powder tower is an old building of the Lindau city fortifications. Built in 1428 by the councilor of the Palatinate, burned down in 1648 and rebuilt in 1662.

      Powder Tower, Lindau
      This fortification was probably deemed necessary as a result of the Swiss War. It is a round tower with a tent roof built in 1508. The defense tower was included in the city walls when the area of the "back island" in Lindau, on which fields, vineyards and a cemetery were located at the time, was fortified.
      At the beginning of the Thirty Years' War (1618 to 1648), the original pitched roof was two meters lower in order to offer less surface to attack. Lindau was finally besieged by Swedish troops in 1646/47 and the fortifications helped to protect the city until the Swedes were repelled by the imperial occupying forces.
      Towards the end of the 18th century, the previous defense tower finally became a powder tower, which gave it its current name. After the Napoleonic Wars, the Lindau militia stored their powder in the tower.
      The tower was structurally modified on the inside in 1897/98, as it was given to the mayor of Lindau, Heinrich Schützinger, as a summer residence:
      A lounge was set up on the ground floor with its two meter thick walls and the upper floor was made accessible by a staircase. On the outside, nothing was changed when the complete conversion was carried out under the supervision of the architect and honorary citizen of Lindau, Prof. Friedrich von Thiersch.
      In 1904, the military moved into the newly built Luitpold barracks on the rear or western island, named after the Bavarian Prince Regent at the time. When the French occupied Lindau without a fight in 1945 and took up positions in the barracks, they also seized the powder tower and it was only released again in the spring of 1952.
      The powder tower has been owned by Stadtwerke Lindau since 1969, it was renovated in 1988 by the restorer Wolfram Kronmüller and meetings and conferences are held here today.

        Old interesting tower. Big story for Lindau island. Unfortunately tur is closed and you can't watch inside. The tower with great potential, but community has no idea. Everything well cared for. Wonderful view!!! Nice place for rest..
