The Stever is a 58 km long, right-bank tributary of the Lippe in the North Rhine-Westphalian districts of Coesfeld, Unna and Recklinghausen. The river valley from the source to the mouth has been called Stevergau since ancient times, which together with the Dreingau forms the landscape of the southern Münsterland.

The Stever rises between Münster and Coesfeld, near the Baumberge watershed. Other watercourses whose sources are nearby therefore flow to the sea in completely different ways.

Below the Westerberg with the Longinus Tower, the source of the Stever is on the southwest slope of the Baumberge at a height of around 130 m near the Bispinghöfe in Uphoven, northwest of the small farming community of Stevern in the Steverquelle nature reserve. The dammed spring pond used to serve as a fire-fighting pond, cattle watering place and fish breeding pond. Several springs and seepages flow so strongly that the small stream quickly becomes a lush stream, which is soon enough to power the first water mill in Stevern.
