Part of a tourism project around the historic railway line "Den IJzerenweg" (The Iron Road). Every section, including this beet wagon (essentially a rest stop and lots of information boards), can also be explored on a listening walk. The text: In 1635, Tienen was burned to the ground. Years of confusion and betrayal followed. Until none other than Napoleon discovered that our Haspengouw soil was the ideal breeding ground for sugar beets. Sugar factories sprang up like mushrooms in Tienen. Soon, a huge transport problem arose. That's why the railway network came to Tienen. The city got its own Iron Road and, after years of chaos, was able to rise from the ashes.
