Many pilgrims once traced the bed of this railway to the Basilica of Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel.

This branch was closed in 1974 and then broken up to be reopened in 2007 as a recreational path for walkers and cyclists.

Today there is a cycle and pedestrian path along the entire route. The route branches off approximately 200 meters east of the station in Zichem, and crosses the Demer valley in a southerly direction. Just past the junction there are still some track remains. The railway bridge over the Demer and near the Maagdentoren is still present and today serves as a pedestrian and cyclist bridge. The route leaves the Demervallei at the Steenweg on Diest and runs through some private lands and gardens, after which it continues as a slow road in a south-westerly direction near the intersection with the Kwalijk-, Wabber- and Bredeveldstraat and crosses several fields. After the intersection with Molenstraat, the route turns south and follows a sunken road. Afterwards, the route runs again through some fields and fields and then passes the old warehouse - which is today used by the municipality - to arrive at the still preserved Scherpenheuvel station.
