The harbor is protected on the eastern side by a 400m long pier. - Remains of the ancient pier can still be seen here. The warships of Rhodes were moored here more than 2,400 years ago. Later, in the Middle Ages, it was the anchorage for knights' galleys. There are three windmills that are still intact on the pier. At the very end of the pier, there are remains of the 15th century fortress of Agios Nikolaos.

The narrow harbor entrance is framed by two pillars on which the island's heraldic animals, the deer (Greek: Elafos) and the hind (Greek: Elafia), stand. The Colossus of Rhodes is said to have once stood there.

Immediately, opposite the harbor, there is a large building, the Nea Agora - in German: new market. Numerous offices, bars and shops have settled here in the square, one and a half storey building. The fish market takes place in its interior, under a hilltop, on weekdays.
