The inland dunes of Nordoe are quite a sight to behold. Despite the poor soil, many insects find a home here. A plaque not far from the dunes tells you more about it.

Many endangered species feel at home in the heaths, dunes, nutrient-poor waters, on grassland and in near-natural deciduous forests. Large mermaids, crested newts, garlic toads, natterjack toads and woodlarks are said to have a permanent retreat in Nordoe south of Itzehoe. Major parts are owned by the federal government. The fauna-flora habitat (FFH) contains one of the few remaining open and intact inland dune landscapes in Schleswig-Holstein. On inland dunes there are dry sandy heaths with heather and gorse in addition to open grassy areas. Some areas have been preserved as open sandy areas, others are overgrown with oak and birch forests. Wet heaths occur in dune valleys. Soil acidic, kratt-like oak forests, wooded dunes and some nutrient-poor shallow water ponds or naturally nutrient-rich waters complete the range of habitats. On the western edge of the site, grassy lawns are included in the area.
