Episcopal Church of the Diocese of Gozo, which includes the islands of Gozo and Comino. It was built between 1697 and 1711 according to designs by the Maltese baroque master builder Lorenzo Gafà and is located in the Citadella of the capital Victoria (Rabat). Two huge bronze statues in front of the cathedral have adorned the main portal since 2006: Pope Pius IX. on the left and Pope John Paul II, who visited the cathedral in 1992, on the right.

Despite the simplicity and architectural sobriety of the exterior, the Cathedral of the Assumption in Victoria hides among the most beautiful interiors in the archipelago.
Baroque style; curious is the painting that creates the optical illusion of a dome on the ceiling and therefore of a larger space.
A statue of Pope John Paul II welcomes us in the churchyard.

The patronage "Mary (or in other spelling:) Assumption of Mary" of this church in Victoria (Gozo/Malta) refers to one of the many commemoration or festival days in honor of the Blessed Mother Mary. It goes back to the feast of her bodily assumption into heaven, which the Church celebrates annually on August 15.
In many rural areas it is customary for the population to collect bunches of herbs (called "Kruggweusch" in the Rhenish dialect) on this day and to bless them in the festival service.
