Since 1974, the province of (Flemish) Brabant has owned the 120 hectare Vinne. In 2000 it was decided to transform the area into a lake again. Work started in 2004; the poplars were cleared and the groundwater level rose because drainage was largely stopped. The entire area is ideal for migratory birds. The Vinne is located on the territory of the merged municipality of Zoutleeuw, south of the hamlet of Ossenweg, just within the province of Flemish Brabant. To the east of it lies Limburg's Duras, also an anchorage. On the cabinet map of the Ferraris (1770-1778), the area - then still a large lake - was intersected from north to south by the border between the Duchy of Brabant and the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. How long does it typically take to walk around Het Vinne Lake?

The domain offers various waymarked nature walks. A full circular walk around the lake, utilizing the main paths and boardwalks, can typically take anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop to observe nature or use the bird-watching huts. Shorter loops are also available for a quicker visit.

Are there specific trails recommended for families with young children at Het Vinne Lake?

Yes, Het Vinne Lake is very family-friendly. Besides the extensive children's playground and play forest, the domain features a sensory experience path and generally easy, well-maintained paths suitable for strollers. What kind of wildlife can I expect to see and where are the best spots for wildlife spotting?

Het Vinne Lake is a protected Natura 2000 site known for its biodiversity. You can expect to see various bird species, especially migratory birds during spring and autumn. Deer, pheasants, and rabbits are also common. The best spots for birdwatching are the dedicated lookout towers and bird-watching huts located along the trails. Keep an eye out for Galloway cattle, which are used for ecological management, grazing in designated areas.

Is Het Vinne Lake suitable for a winter hike, and what should I be aware of?

Yes, Het Vinne Lake can be beautiful for winter hikes. The domain is accessible every day from sunrise to sunset. Dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear. The bistro might offer warm drinks to enjoy after your walk.

Are there any hidden viewpoints or unique natural features to look out for beyond the main trails?

While the main trails and boardwalks offer excellent views, the true 'hidden' gems often lie in the subtle details. Look for the unique spontaneous forest growth, including oak, ash, alder, and hawthorn, which contrasts with the historical poplar plantations. The various bird-watching huts provide unique perspectives of the lake and its avian inhabitants that might feel like hidden discoveries. The historical context of the lake's restoration also adds a layer of appreciation to its natural features.

What is the typical terrain and elevation difficulty of the trails at Het Vinne Lake?

The terrain around Het Vinne Lake is generally considered easy. It is situated at an elevation of 70 meters, and the paths are mostly flat and well-maintained. The presence of boardwalks (knuppelpaden or vlonderpaden) over the water further ensures a smooth walking surface. Absolutely. Het Vinne Lake is unique as the only natural inland lake in Flanders. Its history is fascinating, having been a natural lake, then drained for peat and later forested with poplars, before undergoing a major restoration project in 2004-2005 to return it to its natural lake state. This restoration created an ideal habitat, making it a significant Natura 2000 site and a haven for migratory birds.
