These sand dunes are the remnants of the sandbanks of the Diestian Sea, which some 7 million years ago, when the Diestian Sea flooded the northern part of present-day Belgium. Parallel to this coastline, which was oriented northeast-southwest, were a large number of sandbanks consisting of moderately coarse sands. When the Diestiaanzee withdrew, the sandbanks came to lie above water and these dunes were created.
You can call these sand dunes the Sahara of Averbode and are very beautiful to walk through!

Majestic inland dunes, which are very typical of this region. They were created by the spraying of sand at the front of the Dutch ice sheet during the last ice age. Sometimes you imagine yourself on the coast, so much sand!

A fairly extensive inland dune, lightly overgrown with some bushes and remnants of felled trees here and there. A nice bench on top. On one side you will also find a cycle path and on the other side a path to the Weefbergven, the bridge over it and the Weefberg witness hill itself. Beautiful views and both walking and playing fun guaranteed.
